Family Update

06 Aug

I want to thank all those who have been praying on behalf of Emilio and our family.  We are so grateful for your love and support.  I must use discretion when talking about the details of the situation but wanted to keep you all as updated as possible.

On Sunday, I spent nearly four hours meeting with the lawyer who had Emilio arrested.  The first two hours were just with Carla and I (to show him that God is on our side and we are not afraid!) , the second time with Wilson and his brother, Toto.  I was seeking to understand where his side of the story and the whole situation.  These meetings confirmed some of the ulterior motives we were suspicious of, but did not result in any good solutions.  At the end of the day on Sunday, we were told that we would need to pay $10,000 US for Emilio to be released!  Absurd, given that it would take 57 years to pay this amount if Wilson gave 100% of his monthly salary.  On Monday, he called Wilson back to tell him it would only be $4,500.  Still too much to pay when you consider into whose hands the money is going.  An alternative was that he would allow him to be released provisionally but would have him arrested again the day after our wedding.  A special favor to us.  As much as I would love to have our brother celebrating with us at our wedding, this is not about our day.  This is about justice and, more importantly, the power of God over evil.

Yesterday held a lot of waiting.  Waiting for people to return phone calls, some who did, some who didn’t.  Waiting to see what the next step was.  Waiting for good news.  Waiting for any news.  We were all going a little stir crazy wishing there was just something we could go out and do to help Emilio.

So how have we seen God working so far?

He is protecting Emilio.  Since the first awful night, he has been kept from harm and we have been able to bring him food and water each day.  Toto was able to get a fan in to Emilio which has made fast friends since he is able to provide people a small respite from the blanketing heat.

He allowed us to meet with the lawyer, who actually agreed to talk with us, and who did not attempt to harm us in any way.

He is providing peace and encouragement, knowing that so many are praying and that He, and only He, is in control of this situation.

How can we keep praying?

Patience.  Waiting on God’s timing can be hard, especially when someone you love is in this kind of situation.

Connections.  We need the right people with the right power in the right places to be both willing and able to help us.

Victory.  The victory is the Lord’s and we know satan will be defeated.  We want the glory to go to God when we see Emilio walk out of those prison gates.

I wonder who is there in prison that God needs Emilio to be witnessing to. Like a “Paul” moment.

Thanks for the update, Sheila. It helps to know specific things to pray for. Giving thanks for the protection and connections that already occurred and praying for continued protection, connections, peace and hope and ultimately victory.
